Bharat Ratna is the prestigious and highest award that a civilian can receive in India. This award is bestowed to an individual for some great contribution to any field. It has been topic of minor controversy sometimes due the selected awardees and due to its limitation to certain areas earlier. Keeping the minor controversies aside this award is one of the most respected across globe and only a person most deserving receives it. It is not limited to Indian citizen and has been awarded to foreign nationals as well. The award is also given posthumously. Constituted in the year 1954, bharat ratna is presented by the president of India. Here are some interesting facts about Bharat Ratna.

1. Bharat Ratna is the highest civilian award in India.

2. Bharat Ratna is given to a human doing great job in any field since December 2011 earlier it was limited to only in the field of science, literature, public services and arts.

3. Maximum of 3 people can be conferred with Bharat Ratna for a year.

4. Recommendations for Bharat Ratna are sent by Prime Minister of the Country to the President.

5. Bharat Ratna awardee is given with a certificate signed by President and a medallion that is shaped of a peepal leaf and does not include any money

6. Bharat Ratna was constituted in the year 1954 and there were three recipients during the first year.

7. The three recipients during the first year of Bharat ratha were C.V Raman, Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan, and  C. Rajagopalachari

8. As of today (2017)a total of 45 people have been awarded with the Bharat Ratna award of which 12 have been awarded posthumously.

9. Prime Minister Lal Bahadur Shashtri was the first person to receive the Bharat Ratna posthumously.

10. There have instances when a foreign national have also been awarded the Bharat Ratna. Khan Adbul Ghaffar khan from Pakistan, Nelson Mandela from south Africa have been awarded with Bharat Ratna. 

11. Neutralised citizen Mother Teresa who was foreign born but spent most of life in India (Indian citizen since 1950) was also awarded the Bharat Ratna in the year 1980

12. The only time a Bharat Ratna was announced but not conferred was for Subhash Chandra Bose due to the oppose from some community as the award was announced to be given posthumously.

13. Sachin Tendulkar in the year 2014 received Bharat Ratna at the age of 40 years. Youngest recipient till date.

14. Awarding Bharat Ratna is not mandatory every year and has been skipped previously.

15. On the table of Government's Table of Precedence Bharat Ratna Winners are listed at number 7. Bharat Ratna winners are provided with diplomatic passports

16. Satyajit Ray is the only film maker that has been awarded with Bharat Ratna.

17. The only film actor to have received this is M.G Namchandran of tamil industry in the year 1988. This selection had caught the controversy that the then Prime minister had bestowed the award in order to woo the state voters.

18. Mahatma Gandhi has not received the Bharat Ratna. It is not a surprise. Mahatma Gandhi is the Father of the Nation and he is greater than any award.

19. VallabhBhai Patel is the eldest to receive the Bharat Ratna award posthumously. He was bestowed with the award posthumously at 116 years.

20. Gulzarilal Nanda is the eldest alive person to receive the award. He was 99 years old when he received the ward.

21. Award to Sachin tendulkar had caught the controversy due to some section of society thought that there were other sportsman who had equally contributed to the sports arena like Milkha Singh, Dyan Chand and also deserved the award. 

22. It was just before Sachin Tendulkar received this award the rules of who could receive the award were modified. Never had any sportsman received the award as category "Sports" was not in the category for Bharat Ratna.
