Amazing Facts About Indian Railways

1. Indian railways is operated by government of India and it is not privately owned or ran.

2. It is third largest railway network in the world and comprises of around 119600 kilometers. 

3. Indian Railways carries around 8.10 Billion people annually that is 22 million peoples a day and runs around 13000 trains daily.

4. It is the largest employer in the world and has around 1.3 Million employees during 2016 year.

6. British introduced railways in India. 

7.The first proposals for railways in India were made in Madras in 1832 

8.The fist railway in India ran in 1837 from red hills to Chintadripet bridge in Madras. This train was mainly used fro goods transport and was not for passengers.

9. The first passenger train in India ran between Bombay  to Thane on 16th April 1853. It was a 3 locomotive engine wth 14 carriages.

10. First electric train ran in 1925 between Victoria terminus and Kurla. It was a  1500V DC overhead traction train.

11. Indian railways have railway links with Pakistan, Bangladesh, Bhutan, Myanmar,Nepal,Thailand,Vietnam. Some of these are under construction and not in same gauge.

12. The two UNESCO World Heritage Sites on Indian Railways are, the Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus and the Mountain Railways of India. Mountain railways include Darjeeling, kalka shimla and nilgiri mountain railways.

13. Gatiman Express with a speed of 160Km/Hr is the fastest train in India that runs between Agra and Delhi. Prime minister Narendra modi has now approved a fast train project that plans to increase the speed of trains to up to 500km/hr and this will be done with the help of japan.

14. Dibrugarh-Kanyakumari Vivek Express is the longest train in India. It travels around 4275 Kilometers an 85 hours of journey. It is longest by both hours as well as distance.

15. Total number of station in India are around 8000 to 8500

16. Gorakhpur Railway station is the longest railway station with length of 1366 meters.
